Just for Kicks

I live in Suburbia. When the homogeneity gets me down and I’m in desperate need of a mullet-sighting, I know a trip to the skating rink will deliver the goods. Last night I was not disappointed. Although now when I look at it, I see that it’s not actually a mullet, but it is RAD nonetheless.

OK, OK, so the reason I went to the skating rink was not only to people-watch, but to take my kids skating. While I was there, I thought I’d practice some motion shots. I had an idea of what I was wanting to get, and I spent a lot of time tweaking my SS and ISO. I sat still on the edge of the rink and focused on a spot in front of me, and basically when anyone came into my viewfinder, I shot. And I panned a couple of times. I’m sure I could have gotten much better shots with a tripod, but really? In a skating rink where kids are falling all over the place? No thanks…

I didn’t get what I had in mind but I thought I would share what I got with you. I’d love your feedback on these and any suggestions that I could try next time.

There was such a thing as too slow a shutter speed…

…and too fast.

Of course the speed of the skater had a lot to do with it, but that was part of the challenge. I had a lot of fun, and I learned more about my camera than I knew before. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Learning as you go?

Get out there and shoot!

  1. When I shoot at hockey rinks, I make a custom white balance by taking a shot of just the ice and then using that image to change the WB in camera. Then I have my ISO at like 2500, shutter speed 250 or 500. The results aren’t bad, still a lot of throw aways, but I get some too.

    • Thank you for the advice! The problem I had was that the lights would be on for awhile then off for awhile… I had to keep readjusting. But – like I said, it was fun!! 🙂
